Global Environment Issues (EVS 205)

This course is all about understanding the environmental challenges our planet faces today. We look at the science behind climate change, pollution, and resource scarcity, and explore the social, political, and ethical dimensions of these issues. Through readings, discussions, and projects, students learn to analyze problems, weigh solutions, and speak confidently about global environmental problems.

Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management (EVS 360)

This course explores how people interact with natural resources and how managers use science, social knowledge, and critical thinking to address environmental challenges. Students learn to analyze real-world cases, understand stakeholder perspectives, and apply interdisciplinary approaches to make resource management projects more effective.

Natural Resource Policy (EVS 364)

In this class, we explore the “why” and “how” of natural resource policy. You’ll examine the history of laws and institutions, dig into the philosophy behind policy decisions, and analyze real-world examples to see how policies affect resource management today.

Applications of
Environmental Science
(ES 111)

Spring 2019, Spring 2020

Applications of Environmental Sciences provides Environmental Sciences majors deeper exploration of topics presented in Introduction to Environmental Sciences [ES 100] through hands-on activities, small-group discussion, and interaction with environmental professionals. Students build skills in data analysis, collaboration, and communication; learn more about Environmental Sciences focal areas and how to select theirs; and begin developing peer networks and mentor relationships with others in the field.

Exploring the Environment 
(ENV 101)

This combined lecture-lab course includes activities in the lab, field, or community that introduce students to NC State and to the available options for environmental majors and careers, such as geosciences, soil sciences, sustainable materials, and natural resources. Students apply the standards of critical and creative thinking in their own work and the work of others. Students learn about the diversity and inter-relatedness of environmental issues, and understand the roles of science, research, technology, policy and socio-economic factors in addressing these issues. Finally, students create a solid foundation on which they can build to enhance their success in college and especially in their studies within the environmental sciences.

This course explores the fundamental principles of the biological and physical sciences behind natural ecosystems. The central focus is the study of ecosystem function, human impact and techniques of environmental assessments. Students consider different worldviews and the development of solutions. Students will be introduced to techniques for environmental assessment. The focus is on field research as applied to environmental management.
